What is the GTC target, and what happens if it never fills?

Layered OptionsLast updated October 27, 2026
Quick answerThe target is the debit × 1.25, set as a Good Till Canceled limit credit: it closes the trade for you when the spread is worth that. If it never fills, the spread is worth the ETF's close at expiry less the bought strike, from nothing up to its 1-dollar width.
The details

The target

The debit × 1.25, to the cent (a debit of 0.64 closes at 0.80). Set it as a GTC limit credit right after you are filled, and it works on its own.

When it hits

The room posts an update: "reached its GTC target". If yours filled, you are out with the gain; if not, check that your GTC is still working at that price.

When it does not

At expiry the spread is worth the ETF's close less the bought strike:

  • under the bought strike: nothing (the debit is the loss, and the most you can lose);
  • between the strikes: part of the dollar;
  • over the sold strike: the full 1-dollar width.

Brokers handle expiring spreads in their own way: check yours, or close it yourself before expiry.
