What is the 43¢ Rule?
Quick answerWe only serve a spread that costs 43¢ or less for every 1 dollar of its width. The less you pay for each dollar the spread can be worth, the more it can make for what you risk.
The details
- Divide the debit by the width. That is what you pay for every 1 dollar the spread can be worth at expiry.
- 43¢ or less is on sale. It is the line that tested best in our research on SPY call debit spreads.
- It is checked in whole cents, never a rounded percent: 43.1¢ is not on sale.
- Only on-sale tickets are served (since Oct 30, 2026). Tickets from before the rule are kept apart under "Before the 43¢ Rule", never hidden, and left out of the record.
Every ticket says its price this way, for example "On sale · 34¢ per 1 dollar". If nothing on the menu is on sale at 3:00 PM, nothing is served that day.
